People like to say they either believe in science or in spirituality, in a way like they don’t go well together. Understandable, some of us prefer to go rationally, others prefer to be driven by their feelings. But I often wonder… Do science and spirituality really exclude each other? Do they truly not go well together?
After having studied Bio-Medical Science for four years, I have an idea of what science is about and how it works. I did an extra course on Neurobiology because I thought the connection between body and mind is so extremely interesting. I always felt there is something magical going on between those two. Of course, I never mentioned the word “magical” those years on University. “Pfiew, thank god she didn’t”. Magic is a huge no-go in science.
Science helps us to get a better understanding of how our world is built up. It brings us lots of interesting and valuable knowledge about life. But does this mean that science is able to understand life fully?
Apparently not. As soon as we thought we were able to figure it all out, our theories about life and reality got rejected by the science of quantum mechanics. The outcome of a quantum experiment can change depending on whether or not we choose to measure a property of the particles involved. What does this mean? Our very own consciousness plays an active role in the experiments we do. Apparently, we affect some experiments by just observing them. Doesn’t that totally go against the way we are taught to think? It basically means that we can’t really think rationally because objectivity is an illusion. Beautiful finding, indeed, but it gets us humans being slightly confused and it takes away our ability to understand life fully. At least for now.
And that’s exactly the direction I want to go and where it gets interesting to me. We want to figure it all out, but it looks like we can’t reach the truth behind life by thinking rationally. And this is where I believe spirituality pops in. There is something else besides the logical, something that likes to play with us, something a bit more magical than science led us to believe. Let’s not give it names, but just stick with life or nature.
Because if nature can adapt to our consciousness and if objectivity is an illusion, why wouldn’t science and spirituality go well together? Who knows what would actually happen when we would connect the two. Maybe it only brings us closer to this something we crave so much to figure out…
